Mahindra SsangYong Rexton Facelift expected launch in India by JAN 2016




 Mahindra SsangYong Rexton facelift could be launched in India by the end of this year in December of early 2016 by February. Rexton’s revivified variant is already on sale in South Korea and the company also displayed a 2.0 litre version of the SUV in India last year at the 2014 Auto Expo held in Delhi. Mahindra SsangYong Rexton is currently available for sale in India with a 2.7 litre diesel engine, the premium SUV is already a popular choice in the D2 segment. As for the facelift variant of the SUV, the India-bound model is likely to receive cosmetic updates and additional features. In the front Rexton could get a reworked radiator grille flanked by the projector head lights featuring LED daytime running lights. Rear is expected to come fitted with a modified tail light cluster while side profile could boast of redesigned alloy wheels. Changes are also expected to be made inside the cabin such as new additional LED cabin lamps, heated seats, redesigned central console and a new steering wheel. Since the 2.0 litre version of the SUV was exhibited at the 12th Auto Expo, therefore it is likely that Mahindra SsangYong could induct this variant in domestic market. In the Indian market, Rexton guns straight against the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Hyundai Santa Fe.

Mahindra Quanto autoSHIFT expected launch in India by JAN 2016




Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd has developed an automatic variant of its popular, Quanto SUV with an all-new 5-Speed automatic transmission. This new avatar of the compact SUV is called Quanto autoSHIFT and was presented for the first time at the 2014 Delhi Motor Show earlier this year.

The Automatic Manual Transmission or AMT has been gaining immense popularity in the country, owing to the long hours spent in traffic, while commuting on a daily basis. The technology was first introduced by Maruti Suzuki with its brand new Celerio hatchback. When Mahindra commercially debuts Quanto autoSHIFT later this year, it will become the first compact SUV in the country to come fitted with an automatic tranny.

Developed in collaboration with UK-based Ricardo, the new 5-Speed autoSHIFT transmission promises to improve the driving experience and increase the fuel efficiency of the vehicle, while providing the convenience of an automatic gearbox. Furthermore, an AMT technology is significantly, cheaper than a fully automatic option, making it economical for all kinds of buyers.

This autoSHIFT technology also features an advanced ECU and hydraulic actuation system that senses demand and initiates gear changes on a highly optimised shift map that has been tuned for higher fuel efficiency. Furthermore, the said tranny also features the new regenerative braking technology, in which kinetic energy is recovered through an alternator and is stored in the battery. This cycle reduces the need of generation during travel. This leads to higher fuel efficiency and reduced emission. Mahindra claims fuel saving of up to 40 litres per annum with its regenerative braking technology - that will soon find its way into other existing and future Mahindra products.
Honda CR-V Facelift expected launch in India by FEB 2016


 The facelifted CR-V crossover from Honda was exhibited at the Bangkok Motor Show earlier this year. Expected to undergo styling changes on the outside, the new generation Honda CR-V is likely to get comprehensive tweaks in front. An aggressive looking solid wing face grille could flank the captivating head lights featuring integrated LED daytime running lights. Changes are expected to be made to the rear profile, a restyled tail gate and a broad chrome strip could ornate rear. Do not expect major revisions on the inside, just a couple of additional gizmos like an all new 7 inch multimedia infotainment system with HDMI, lane change assist system and a three-angle reverse parking camera could be placed.

Engine & Transmission

Power generation will be supposedly done by the same 2.0 litre and 2.4 litre, four pot i-VTEC petrol engines performing respective duties in the pre-facelift version. The 2.0 litre motor will be offered on the entry level variants while the high displacement 2.5 litre motor willpower high end grades. Also a CVT could be paired to the 2.4 litre engine, replacing the five-speed AT. Along with a forward drive variant, Honda is likely to spin an all wheel drive variant of the crossover. If at all Honda brings diesel variant of the crossover, it could get a 1.6 litre i-DTEC diesel motor outputting 118 Bhp. Rumours also suggest that a nine-speed automatic transmission could be coupled to the diesel trim.

Expected Mileage

Since the engine will be retained, hence there will be no change in the fuel economy.

Expected Price

Honda will bring CR-V through CKD route, and hence pricing is likely to be competitive. Hypothetical price being speculated for the upcoming CR-V ranges between Rs 21 lakh to Rs 25 lakh.

 Mercedes-Benz GLC expected launch in India by FEB 2016



The German luxury car maker, Mercedes-Benz recently unveiled its much talked crossover the GLC at the Hugo Boss Facility in Mitzingen, Germany. The design of this car resembles much with the sedan sibling, the C-Class and it is based on the Mercedes-Benz MRA platform. The bold curvy design like the GLA class enhances its presence on roads and the Chrome twin-slatted radiator grille, Fresh alloy wheels, C-Class like headlights, Sturdy front bumper, Large wraparound tail lights and Rear spoiler with combined antenna make it more stunning from outside.Likewise, the interiors also resemble with the C-Class and offer lavish comforts. Mirror finish on the centre console, Burmeister Audio System and Aluminium finished buttons & dials are the major interior highlights of this car. For the luxury SUV enthusiasts, the GLC can prove to be an ideal choice with its exceptional capabilities and advance equipment. In addition, the interiors of this car will have sufficient space for passengers to accommodate comfortably. The car maker has offered it with 118 mm longer wheelbase compared to the GLK that creates legroom in abundance thereby offering additional comfort to the occupants.

Engine & Transmission

Anticipations are that the car maker will launch the GLC crossover in three engine types that includes two petrol and one diesel mill. The 220d and the 250d power-train types are anticipated to launch in the Indian subcontinent, while the 367 HP petrol mill launch in the domestic territory seems uncertain. All these engines will come mated a 9-speed automatic transmission. Plus the power supply to the wheels will be through the 4MATIC four wheel drive system. Moreover, this crossover is also speculated to come with a hybrid motor in the 350 variant that will have potential to produce 320 HP.

Expected mileage
The GLC crossover will be based on the Mercedes-Benz MRA platform that uses light weight metals like aluminium in its construction which enables this car to consume less fuel and run effortlessly. In terms of fuel efficiency, the GLC 350 hybrid will be an exceptional machine that will run 100 kilometres in 2.6 litres fuel consumption.

Expected price

The GLC will be an entry level crossover in the Mercedes-Benz stable that will cost cheaper than the entry level products from the competitors. Expectations are that the car maker will introduce this classy compact crossover in the price bracket of Rs. 26 lakh – Rs. 30 lakh.

Volvo XC30 expected launch in India by FEB 2016


 The trend of compact crossovers made to look to big, sporty and aggressive is gaining momentum all over the world. So much so, that not even luxury carmakers want to be left behind in this rapidly growing and hugely lucrative segment. The latest automaker to join the bandwagon of compact crossovers is the Swedish automaker Volvo who have reportedly, prioritised the development of an entry-level SUV as part of a broader future model strategy. This new model will be tagged as the Volvo XC30 in the global markets and will be based on larger XC60 SUV. Pegged to launch sometime by the end of 2015 or early 2016, the XC30 will rival the likes of Audi Q3, BMW X1 and the Mercedes Benz B-Class.

The baby Volvo will be based on the four wheel drive version of the existing C30s contemporary unitary platform that is internally being termed as the P1 structure. Dimensionally, the Volvo XC30 measures 4,350mm in length making is 280mm shorter that the current XC60. It is understood that Volvo might build two versions of the XC30 - a standard wheelbase model for the markets in Europe and an extended wheelbase model for the customers in India and China.

The Volvo XC30 will reportedly, be built at the Swedish carmaker’s newly acquired Geely Automotive in China and is expected to debut in the international markets sometime by the end of 2014 and is slated to make its commercial debut in the country in 2016. With the XC30, Volvo is hoping to attract the younger generation of buyers and is aiming to achieve the sort of profitability that the larger XC60 gathered in the global markets.

 Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd bought the Korean entity, Ssangyong back in 2011 and one of the first products that was expected to see the light of day in the country, resulting out of this takeover was the Korando C SUV. However, the Indian automaker decided to give the priority to the Rexton SUV instead, which made its commercial launch in 2012. Now that, the Rexton SUV has settled well into the Indian market and established its base, Mahindra has started prepping the next SUV from the Ssangyong line-up for its debut in the country.

Ssangyong has been building SUVs since the 1983 under the Korando badging and the model that is headed to India is in its fifth generation that was previewed at the 2010 Busan Motor Show. This product has been designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign fame and has become quite popular in the international markets, for its aggressive body, angular design and large flared wheel arches. At the front there are the hexagonal fog lamps, the double slat grille, which accommodates the large Ssangyong badge. The headlamps are wraparound and get LED treatment. There is the large black plastic cladding all around the lower part of the body. At the back, the Korando C features dual chrome exhausts, rear spoiler and brake lights.

On the inside, the SUV features all the conventional tech and gadgetry that one would expect from a Korean car. There is the touchscreen satellite navigation system, which can be controlled via the dials on the centre console or via the steering mounted controls. Feature wise, the SUV has been equipped with ABS, EBD, two airbags, cruise control, climate control and newly designed alloy wheels.

Initially, the Korando SUV was being powered by a 2.0-litre Isuzu engine, but later it was ditched for the more powerful and frugal 2.3-litre Mercedes Benz engine. The 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine is able to churn out 175PS and 360Nm of peak torque. The engine comes mated to a 6-Speed manual automatic transmission that sends power to the front wheels. An all wheel drive option is also available with the Korando C.

The Ssangyong Korando C will be built at its parent company Mahindra’s plant in Chakan near Pune. This will help the Indian automaker to launch the SUV at a very aggressive price, owing to almost 22 per cent localisation. In the Indian market, the Ssangyong Korando C will compete with the likes of Chevrolet Captiva, Renault Koleos and the Skoda Yeti.

Volkswagen Tiguan expected launch in India by FEB 2016


The Indian market’s affinity towards all thing SUVs is beyond reproach. The many automakers running their respective businesses in India know this quite well. In the past few years, no other segment has shown such impressive growth as the SUV segment. It is no surprise then, that many automakers prepare to roll out their own version of the compact crossover for the Indian market. Volkswagen is one such automaker that is closely eying to make its foray in the lucrative compact SUV segment, after successfully establishing base in the hatchback, sedan and the premium SUV segment. For the job, Volkswagen is betting high and hard on its Taigun Concept that was presented for the first time at the 2012 Sao Paulo Motor Show.

Volkswagen Tiguan Platform

The Volkswagen Tiguan is based on the company’s new ’New Small Family Platform’ that also underpins the new Volkswagen Up! that is expected to arrive in India in 2014. The Concept measures 3,859mm long, 1,728mm wide and the 1,570mm tall. Its sub 4-metre length makes the Taigun eligible for the excise duty reduction benefit. The wheelbase of the car measures 2,470mm, which is large given the overall length of the car. The resulting effect? Short overhangs and aggressive and appealing stance of the car.

On the inside, the Tiguan has been equipped with simple and smart dashboard that features three dials for the infotainment system. There is also a touch screen interface, which supports functions such as Bluetooth, audio system and the satellite navigation system.

Under the hood of the Concept car, is a new 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged TSI engine that is rated at 110PS of max power and 175Nm of peak torque at 1,500rpm. The said engine range has been extended to that of a three-cylinder petrol unit as well, by adding fuel injection and turbocharging technology. The 0 to 100 kmph is reached in 9.2 seconds with a top speed of 186 kmph. Volkswagen claims a fuel economy of around 22 kmpl.

The Volkswagen Tiguan will be positioned above the Up! hatchback in the Indian market and will compete with the likes of Ford EcoSport, Nissan Terrano and the Renault Duster SUV.

Jeep Grand Cherokee expected launch in India by MAY 2016

Looking to lock horns with the premium luxury automakers such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz and Land Rover, the Italian automaker Fiat has made its intention clear of bringing the iconic Jeep brand into the country. Courtesy of the Fiat-Chrysler Group, the first two products that will make it way into the Indian market will be the Jeep Grand Cherokee and its smaller sibling, the Wrangler SUV. Both these models were slated to arrive in the market in 2013. However, due to economic slowdown, Fiat decided to postpone the launch, until such time the market starts showing signs of recovery.

Benz M-Class, Mitsubishi Montero and the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. The SUV will be initially brought into the country via the CBU route from North America and if the market response is positive, Fiat might set up a local assembly unit for its SUV brand.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Interior
Visually, the Jeep Grand Cherokee looks imposing with its huge dimensions. It measures 4,821mm in length, 1,943mm in width and stands 1,730mm tall. The large dimensions are well complimented with strong and square wheel arches, the generous use of chrome, the iconic seven slat grille and the futuristic-looking headlamps. Inside, the Grand Cherokee, you will find the dashboard and the doors constructed in a mix of leather and soft fabric. The overall layout of the cabin is clean clutter-free and comes loaded with a long list comfort, entertainment and safety features.

Under the hood, expect a 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine developed by VM Motori of Italy that churns out 237PS of max power and 549Nm of peak torque. The unit comes mated to an 8-Speed ZF transmission. The 0 to 100 kmph mark is reached in 8.3 seconds with a top speed of over 200 kmph. The suspension is tuned for comfort, rather than handling - making it perfect for Indian road conditions. The SUV will also feature an electronic control over the suspension, differentials and stability control that is programmed for a one-touch suitability for different surfaces, just like Land Rover’s Terrain Response System.
Jeep Wrangler expected launch in India by MAY 2016


It was back in 2012, when Italian automaker Fiat officially announced its intention of launching the iconic SUV brand, Jeep in India - courtesy of the Fiat-Chrysler Group. And the first two products from the Jeep brand to land on Indian shores were reported to be the Jeep Wrangler and the Cherokee SUC that were slated for a commercial launch in 2013. However, fast forward to 2014 and we are yet, to see any movement from Fiat or Jeep in the country. The indefinite delay we hear, is a result of the overall slump period in the auto industry and the uninspiring sales. Fiat therefore, has postponed the launch of its Jeep brand, until such time the market starts showing signs of recovery. According to the latest reports, the Jeep brand could be launched in India before the end of 2014.

When the Jeep brand finally opens shops in the country, we expect to see the Wrangler SUV fighting it out with the likes of Ford Endeavour, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Toyota Fortuner and the Audi Q3 Quattro. Originated in late 80s, the Wrangler SUV came into being as a replacement of the conventional CJ series of Jeep and is based on the iconic Willy’s Jeep. Visually, the Wrangler SUV shares a lot of resemblance with the Willy’s, but sports more aggressive and masculine features. For the Indian market, Fiat could bring both the standard wheelbase model with two-doors and the long wheelbase variant with four-doors.

Powering the Wrangler SUV, is a 2.8-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine that is able to churn out 197PS of max power and 460Nm of peak torque. The engine will come mated to a 6-Speed manual transmission or a 5-Speed automatic transmission. The American automaker has equipped the Wrangler with its own Command-Trac four-wheel drive system, which splits torque in the ratio of 50:50 to the front and the rear axle, when driven in either 4L or 4H.

The Jeep Wrangler SUV will be initially brought into the country via the CBU route from North America and if the company receives a positive response from the market, Fiat could begin the local assembly of the SUV. The SUV will be offered on sale in ten Fiat dealerships in India.
