Govt must be told about all dengue cases

MUMBAI: It will be mandatory for doctors (private and government) to inform the state administration about dengue cases. Worried with the increasing cases of dengue, especially in Mumbai, the public health department on Friday issued an order that all doctors must inform the government about the dengue cases they come across.

"Information of dengue patients should be given to the state administration.
In order to ensure effective implementation of the order, the department has asked the officials concerned to organize a workshop for private doctors," public health minister Suresh Shetty, said.

Alarmed with the rising cases of dengue in Mumbai and other parts of the state, Shetty on Friday had called a meeting of health officials on Friday. The meeting chaired by Shetty was attended T C Benjamin (additional chief secretary, health) and senior health officials from the BMC attended the meeting.

In August alone 110 cases tested dengue positive. In the first three week of September 136 citizens in the city have tested positive for dengue.

"Malaria and dengue are mosquito-borne diseases. The efforts taken by the BMC to control malaria have resulted in a 70% decline in the cases compared with last year. Similar efforts have been taken to tackle dengue. The BMC has identified pockets in the city that has seen a rise in dengue cases. Measures have been initiated to control the further spread of the disease," said BMC additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar-Patankar.

On October 5, a meeting of the additional chief secretary (health) and BMC officials has been organized to work out modalities for controlling dengue, a press release issued by the health department said.

Additional chief secretary (health) T C Benjamin during the meeting suggested that 10% of the total advertisement hoardings in Mumbai should be reserved for health-related messages to be communicated to citizens.

Further in the meeting, Shetty suggested health check-up for the labourers working on construction sites should be made mandatory. "The onus of health check-up should be put on the contractor concerned," Shetty said.

The minister further instructed the civic officials to take focus on cleanliness drive in slum pockets, construction sites and areas known for waterlogging, so that the further spread of the disease could be controlled.

With winter season beginning from the next month the temperature will be on its way down and thus resulting in rise of swine flu cases. "With drop in mercury spread of swine flu is likely to increase. Hence, in the health department in the meeting reviewed swine flu cases and its preparation to deal the situation," the official added.

25 % of heart disease victims in India under age of 40

25 % of heart disease victims in India under age of 40
New Delhi: Rapid change in lifestyle has contributed more to heart diseases among older people across the globe, but the case is entirely different in India with almost 25 per cent of the victims of cardiac arrests falling under the age of 40.

On the World Heart Day today, cardiologists stress the need on creating larger awareness on the ill-effects of heart diseases and suggest simple ways like quitting smoking, visiting doctors regularly and reducing stress to ward off the deadly disease that takes the lives of thousands of people.

And, they say, children might also be under greater threat of developing cardio vascular diseases with over 60,000 to 90,000 kids getting affected by heart ailments every year in India.
Remaining active, eating healthy food, quitting smoking or saying no to smoking, beating stress and going for regular health check-ups are some of the ways the doctors suggest to people to prevent such diseases.

Apollo Hospitals Chairman Prataph C Reddy, a leading cardiologist himself, says doctors estimate that Indians are nearly four times more susceptible to heart attacks than people in western countries with 25 per cent of those generating such diseases to be under the age of 40.

"This is unheard of in other populations. Fast-paced lifestyle is one reason and another is that Indians are genetically predisposed to attract heart ailments," he says.

Reddy says women might also be in greater danger as they can be attracted to heart diseases after the age of 50 and suggests regular medical checkups as one of the ways to prevent such ailments.

Another cardiologist Dr K S Dagar of Max Hospitals lays emphasis on preventing congenital heart disease, saying the gap between the detection and curing of such cases needed to bridged on a "war-footing".

‘1920: Evil Returns’: Vikram Bhatt is back to scare you

1920 Evil Returns: Trailer
1920 Evil Returns: Trailer
It seems that horror is the new 'romance' for Bollywood producers and directors. After Vikram Bhatt's Raaz 3, Ram Gopal Varma's Bhoot Returns (desi Paranormal Activity) and Suparn Varma's Aatma, surely the list is going to lengthen in the imminent days.

However, Vikram Bhatt, a vanguard of the horror genre, is again ready to shock the audience with his new supernatural thriller 1920: Evil Returns, a sequel to his earlier movie 1920. This film broadens Vikram's love for Scott Derrickson's Hollywood horror drama, The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Starring Aftab Shivdasani, Tia Bajpai and Vidya Malvade in the lead, the trailer of the movie is just launched and is getting good reviews, especially for actress Tia Bajpai's awe-inspiring acting. After Vikram's Haunted, she would surely get rave reviews for her role in the flick.

1920: Evil Returns is also a comeback for Aftab (last seen in Players in 2012) and Vidya Malvade after 2010's Striker on silver screen.

For the movie Vikram Bhatt has given 'free rein' to actor, cinematographer and now director Bhushan Patel, who has been associated with Bhatts for movies like Tamanna, Dastak, Bambai Ka Babu etc.

Most part of the film is filmed in Sweden, especially for its palaces, country side and autumn season. Cinematographer Naren Gedia has stunningly captured the spirit and essence of the movie. Music of the film is given by Chirantan Bhatt.

The movie, as its trailer shows, is more spine-chilling and eerie than 192o.

1920: Evil Returns is scheduled to release on November 2, 2012.

Facebook row prompts Europe to consider tighter data rules

facebook-data-635.jpg

An EU lawmaker called for tighter control of on-line social networks under a data protection regulation now being debated after some Facebook users said their personal messages appeared on their public profiles.

EU regulators are in the midst of writing new legislation that could give internet users greater control over how their personal data is used by big technology companies. One part of the regulation requires companies to get permission before "processing" people's personal data, although exactly how and when such consent would be needed is still subject to debate.

On Tuesday the French data protection regulator asked to meet Facebook after thousands of users complained private messages dating back to 2007 were visible on their Facebook timelines the start page of a person's profile on the website.

Jan Philipp Albrecht, a German Green member of the European Parliament who is in charge of the legislature's work on the draft regulation said the incident shows that users need more control over their data.

"The informed and explicit agreement of all those affected by data processing must be a guiding principle," Albrecht said in a press statement. "There will be very few exceptions if any."

Facebook said it has not done anything wrong and that the messages are in fact called wall posts, one of the website's features for leaving comments which usually appears on a person's profile page.

Before the Facebook timeline was introduced in February, wall posts were visible on user's profile pages but could also be hidden from the public depending on each user's privacy settings.

"A small number of users raised concerns after what they mistakenly believed to be private messages appeared on their Timeline," the company said in a statement.

Nevertheless EU lawmakers are taking the incident seriously.
"This case shows that some companies simply don't take privacy issues as seriously as their share price," the Commissioner for Justice behind the regulation, Viviane Reding, said at a meeting with regulators in Dublin on Monday.

The Commission, the European Parliament and the 27 member states have to agree on the regulation before it can become law. The parliament will begin submitting amendments later this year.

Web companies like Google, Facebook and Yahoo, which rely on their user's data to tailor their services to people's interests, have said they are wary of the regulation's principles on seeking users' consent. These companies' business models are also based on selling targeted ads matched to people's profiles.

Some say they worry that asking permission for the use of people's data more than they already do could hamper their services with consent-seeking pop-ups and encourage people to opt-out rather than in.

HP has announced the launch of Envy Spectre XP ultrabook in the Indian market.

The HP Envy Spectre XP ultrabook comes with a 13.3-inch 1366x768 display and is powered by 3rd generation Intel Core processors. Happy Birthday! Google turns 14

Google turned 14 Thursday and celebrated its birthday with a doodle of a rich chocolate cake. Google was inscribed across the cake and seconds after opening the site, the 14 candles atop the delicacy get extinguished. A click on the doodle displayed a list of Google products.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google in September 1998. Since then, the company has grown to more than 30,000 employees worldwide.

Page and Brin met at Stanford University in 1995. By 1996, they had built a search engine (initially called BackRub) that used links to determine the importance of individual webpages. And the rest is history.
